Fringe Lily (Thysanotus tuberosus)

Botanical Information:

Family: Asparagaceae
Genus: Thysanotus
Species: tuberosus

Meaning of name:
Thysanotus is from Greek: thysanotus, fringed. A reference to the appearance of the edges of the flowers
tuberosus is from Latin: tuber, lump, bump, swelling. A reference to the crisp edible tubers on the roots

The Fringe Lily is found in grassland and woodland areas from mid coast Queensland into New South Wales, Victoria and into South Australia. It grows to 80 cm (31 inches) tall, and each branched stem can bear up to eight flowers, which appear in spring and summer. The 25mm (1 inch) flowers are lily-like, mauve to purple in colour, and last only one day. New flowers are continually produced over the flowering period.

The Fringe Lily has proven difficult to maintain in cultivation though seed propagation is fairly easy as no special pre-treatment is required.
