Botanical Information:

Genus: Hardenbergia
Species: violacea

Meaning of name:
Hardenbergia, after Franziska Countess von Hardenberg and named by English botanist George Bentham in 1837 in honour of the 19th century Austrian botanist
violacea is from Latin: viola, violet. A reference to the typical flower colour

Hardenbergia is a small genus with only three species. Hardenbergia violacea is the most common and well-known of these.

Hardenbergia violacea is also known as Native Sarsaparilla and Purple Coral Pea. It is widespread in a number of habitats from the coast to the mountains, but is more common in the open forest/woodland regions. It is found in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.

H. violacea is a climbing vine which flowers in winter and spring. Flowers are typically violet, but white and pink colours are known.

This print features in the Two Coral Peas diptych.
