Botanical Information:

Family: Proteaceae
Genus: Stenocarpus
Species: sinuatus

Meaning of name:
Stenocarpus is from Greek: stenos, narrow + carpos, a fruit. A refernce to the seed capsule
sinuatus is from Latin: sinuare, to wind, curve, arch. A reference to the wavy leaf margins (edges)

The firewheel tree’s natural distribution is the rainforest regions of northern New South Wales up into tropical Queensland, but it adapts to a wide range of climates, even dry ones if enough water is available to it. It is a popular ornamental tree in Australia and around the world.

‘Firewheel’ refers to the spectacular wheel-like arrangement of the bright red flowers which appear in summer through to autumn.
